About
Every divorce action begins with understanding the legal framework that governs it—and drafting a petition that positions the case correctly from day one. This class introduces the core structure of Georgia divorce law, including equitable division principles, the types of property distribution courts may apply, the factors judges consider when allocating assets and debts, and the role of attorney’s fees in domestic cases. Participants will gain a practical understanding of how these principles influence litigation strategy, negotiation posture, and overall case direction. The class then transitions into the strategic drafting of the Petition for Divorce. Rather than simply completing a template, the focus is on how the initial pleading shapes the trajectory of the case. Participants will learn how to properly allege jurisdiction, venue, and statutory grounds, while framing claims for property division, alimony, custody (when applicable), and attorney’s fees in a way that preserves remedies and avoids common drafting mistakes. By the end of the session, participants will understand both the legal framework underlying divorce in Georgia and how to draft a petition that reflects that framework—establishing the scope, tone, and strategic direction of the case from the very beginning. Digital, editable templates used in this class are included. _______________________________ Want to take it a step further? Want training tailored to your firm?
